McLeod County, Minnesota
McLeod County was created by the Minnesota territorial legislature March 1, 1856, and was organized March 11, 1856. Although over 57 percent of McLeod County residents claim German heritage, the county is named after a Scotchman, Martin McLeod, who was one of the first settlers in the area. About a dozen Scottish settlers founded a settlement and called it Glencoe, after Glencoe, Scotland.
Although Glencoe was designated and remains the county seat, the largest city is Hutchinson.
Hutchinson, Minnesota is said to be founded by the Hutchinson Family Singers. A statue of John, Asa and Judson Hutchinson is located in the Library Square Park. Hutchinson has second oldest park system in the nation. Only Central Park in New York City is older.
Along with the two largest cities of Glencoe and Hutchinson, McLeod County has seven smaller cities that embrace small town Minnesota.
Winsted is the third largest with five major employers, a new industrial park, downtown shopping, grocery store and a branch of the Pioneerland Library system.
Lester Prairie also offers easy small-town living with two new housing developments, bank, hardware store, grocery store, three restaurants and three major employers.
The cities of Brownton, Stewart, Plato, Silver Lake and Biscay are all within easy driving distance of the shopping in Hutchinson or Glencoe. Each of these small towns has a bar/restaurant. Plato’s Kingpin has burgers and bowling. Silver Lake’s latest addition is “Books and Beans,” a combination restaurant/used book store.
Each of McLeod County’s cities lie on a major trunk highway into the metro area for an easy commute, but each city offers attractions of its own.
